Smoking: Why You Should Quit

April 17 2015 – ROBERT FIUMARA

If you’re a smoker, you know that tobacco is harmful to your health and the health of those around you.  It’s common knowledge that smoking causes many health issues including cancer, gum disease, lung disease, and a myriad of other dangerous ailments.  Even the Surgeon General agrees that quitting smoking is the single most important step a smoker can take to improve their quality and length of life.  But smokers also know that quitting is a challenging task.  We’ve compiled a list of reasons why quitting important as well as some tips for success!

First off, quitting smoking lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and just after one year of quitting, the threat of heart attack drops significantly.  As soon as a smoker stops, their body begins to repair itself from the damage caused by smoking.  It’s best to quit smoking early in life but even those who have smoked for many years will improve their health.  Another reason to quit smoking is the cost savings!  Smoking is expensive and in some places, a pack of cigarettes can cost upwards of $10!  If you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and it costs $5.00 per pack that means you’re spending $1,825.00 a year on cigarettes.  Just think of what you could do with that money instead!

Smoking is also dangerous to those around you.  Doctors say that secondhand smoke is a cause of many illnesses, especially in children.  Secondhand smoke has been linked to an increase in chest colds and ear infections in children.  Babies who are born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy have an increased risk of developing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) as well as a risk of premature delivery and low birth weight.  Doctor’s also say that secondhand smoke can cause a person to have sleepless nights and develop a snoring problem.  You might not realize that smoking and secondhand smoke can also affect your taste buds, making food taste better once you quit!

While quitting smoking is hard, it’s far from impossible.  There are a variety of ways to quit smoking including going cold turkey, behavioral therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medication, and a combo of any of these options.  While some options work better than others it’s important that you choose one and stick with it.  Doctor’s recommend that once you’ve committed to quitting you avoid situations that will make you feel like smoking, especially in the first three months of quitting.  The first few days will likely be the toughest and you’ll feel irritable, depressed, slow, and tired.  But keep your head up!  Once you get past those first couple of days, you’ll feel like a new person.  You can also try to replace your cigarettes with candy, gum, or even try taking up a new hobby to keep your mind occupied when you begin craving a cigarette.  When you no longer smoke, you’ll be shocked at how much better you feel, inside and out!
